How to Draw Bubble Letter S
Bubble S is a smooth vertical wave: a top curve rolling one way, a bottom curve rolling the other, joined at the middle. It is NOT the pointy cool S — that famous schoolyard mark is a different beast, covered below.
Roll the top curve
Start at the upper right and sweep left and down in a generous C-shaped curve, like the top half of a sideways heart. This curve should feel open and relaxed.
Reverse at the middle
At the letter's midpoint, reverse direction smoothly — no corner, no kink — and sweep into the bottom curve. The transition is the soul of the S; ease through it like a skier carving a turn.
Close the bottom curve
Finish with a bottom curve mirroring the top, sweeping right and around to end at the lower left. The two curves should feel like siblings, similar in size and openness.
Balance the halves
Check that the top and bottom curves are roughly equal. Beginners almost always draw one larger — compare them deliberately before thickening.
Puff the wave
Outline the wave with an even bubble stroke, keeping the spine's width consistent through the middle transition. Erase the guides and admire the smoothest letter in the alphabet.
Common mistake
The unbalanced wave
The classic S error is a big top curve with a tiny bottom (or the reverse), making the letter look like it's tipping over. After sketching, cover each half with your thumb in turn — both halves should look like plausible letters on their own.
