How to Draw Bubble Letter I
Capital I is the simplest capital to draw: one vertical stem with a horizontal bar top and bottom. The entire craft lies in keeping the stem perfectly straight and the two bars level.
Drop the stem
Draw one clean vertical line. With nothing else to hide behind, this single stroke must be straight — use the edge of an index card as a guide if your freehand wobbles.
Cap the top
Add a short horizontal bar centered across the top of the stem, like the top of a tiny table. The bar should extend equally on both sides.
Base the bottom
Mirror the same bar across the bottom of the stem. Two matching bars are what separate a capital I from a plain stick.
Puff the column
Outline the shape with an even bubble stroke, rounding the bar ends into soft caps. Keep the stem's width consistent from top to bottom.
Check for lean
Erase the guides and hold the page at arm's length. Even a slight lean reads loudly on such a simple letter — straighten any tilt before inking.
Common mistake
The leaning tower
Because I has no curves to forgive a shaky hand, beginners often finish with a letter that tilts a few degrees. Check verticality against the page edge before you ink — on this letter, two degrees of lean looks like twenty.
I and L are the alphabet's straight-line specialists — master I's plumb-vertical stem and L's clean corner becomes easy. Compare the two on the bubble letter L page. Bubble letter L guide →
Lowercase
Lowercase Bubble Letter i
Lowercase i is a short stem with a dot — and that dot is a decoration opportunity. Hearts, stars, and circles all work, which is why kids' name art leans so hard on this letter.
Draw the short stem
Make a straight vertical line at x-height — much shorter than the capital, sitting between baseline and midline.
Float the dot
Place a round dot above the stem with a clear gap between them. The dot should hover, not touch — contact makes the letter read as an exclamation mark.
Decorate (optional)
Swap the round dot for a heart or star when making art. Then add the bubble outline to the stem, keeping the dot as a separate puffy shape.

I's dot is a classroom gift — it turns a handwriting lesson into an art project the moment you allow heart-shaped tittles.
Dot-decoration station
Set out the lowercase i coloring page and let kids replace the dot with hearts, stars, flowers, or their initial. Handwriting practice that feels like sticker art.
The one-letter word hunt
Search a picture book for the word 'I' — the only single-letter word in English. Kids grasp pronouns faster when they have hunted the word themselves.
Straight-line challenge
Time kids drawing five capital I's freehand, then check each against a ruler edge. It builds the straight-stroke control that B, D, and H all depend on.
In the Wild
Bubble Letter I in the Wild
I is the Roman numeral for 1, the pronoun that is a word all by itself, and — via Apple's iPhone and iPad — arguably the most commercially printed lowercase letter in history.
FAQ
Bubble Letter I FAQs
What is the hardest part of drawing bubble letter I?+
Keeping it perfectly vertical. With no curves to distract the eye, even a slight lean screams. Check the stem against the page edge before inking, and keep both bars level and equally extended.
How do I draw a lowercase bubble i?+
Draw a short straight stem at x-height, then float a round dot above it with a clear gap. For art projects, swap the dot for a heart or star, and puff the stem with a bubble outline while keeping the dot separate.
Why is the dot on the lowercase i special?+
It has its own name — the tittle — and it is the alphabet's most decoratable feature. Hearts, stars, and flowers all substitute for the round dot in kids' art, which is why name posters lean so hard on this letter.
Can I download bubble letter I as a PNG?+
Yes. Click Download PNG beneath any of the 60+ styles to save a crisp image of your bubble I, with a transparent background option for layering over photos, worksheets, or slides.
Can I use bubble letter I on Instagram or TikTok?+
Definitely — copy any style from the generator and paste it into your bio or captions. The Unicode bubble text works anywhere regular text works, so no image upload is needed.
When should I pick outline over filled styles?+
Outline letters are hollow and designed for coloring; filled letters are solid and stay readable at small sizes. For the slender I, filled styles hold up better in tiny usernames, while outline suits printed crafts.
Can I print bubble letter I for my classroom?+
Yes — this page includes a printable I coloring page with a big outline for tracing and coloring. It doubles as the dot-decoration worksheet described in the classroom ideas above.
