How to Draw Bubble Letter J
Capital J drops a straight stem from the top bar, then curves left into a hook at the bottom — crossing the baseline on the way. That descender is the letter's entire identity.
Set the top bar
Draw a short horizontal bar at the top, like the brim of a hat. This bar anchors the letter and gives the eye a starting point.
Drop the stem
From the middle of the bar, draw a straight stem downward, continuing past the baseline — J is one of the few capitals allowed below the line.
Curl the hook
At the bottom, curve the stem smoothly to the left into a rounded hook, like the end of a candy cane lying on its side. The hook should rise back up to about baseline level.
Inflate the shape
Add a puffy bubble outline along the whole path, keeping the hook's inner curve smooth. The trickiest spot is the transition from straight stem to curve — ease it, don't kink it.
Check the swing
Erase the guides. The hook should swing left with confidence; a timid, tiny hook makes the letter read as a broken I.
Common mistake
The rightward hook
Beginners sometimes curl the hook to the right, which produces a shape with no alphabet identity at all. The J hook always swings left — say 'hook goes home to the left' while drawing until the direction is automatic.
J is I with a hook and a descender — compare the two skeletons and you will see the family resemblance instantly. The bubble letter I page is the perfect five-minute warm-up. Bubble letter I guide →
Lowercase
Lowercase Bubble Letter j
Lowercase j is the capital in miniature, plus a dot. Same top bar, same leftward hook below the baseline, with the tittle floating above.
Shrink the skeleton
Draw the same bar-stem-hook shape as the capital, but sized so the bar sits at x-height and only the hook dips below the baseline.
Dot it
Float a round dot above the bar with a clear gap — the same tittle rule as lowercase i.
Puff carefully
Bubble-outline the stem and hook, keeping the hook's curve open. Small letters punish kinks, so keep the curve generous.

For Teachers & Parents
Classroom & Craft Ideas for Letter J
J teaches the concept of the baseline and descender in one letter — the line that most letters sit on, and the space below it that only a few dare to visit.
Baseline border patrol
Draw a bold baseline and sort letter cards into 'stays on the line' vs 'dives below.' J becomes the poster child for descenders — a vocabulary word kids remember because they acted it out.
Hook-direction drill
Draw rows of hooks curving left and right, and have kids circle only the J-hooks. It fixes the leftward-hook rule faster than any lecture.
J is for Jellyfish mobile
Turn printed bubble J's upside down — the hook becomes a jellyfish bell — add streamer tentacles, and hang a whole alphabet reef from the ceiling.
In the Wild
Bubble Letter J in the Wild
J's youth is its story: it was the last letter to split off as its own character, separating from I in the 1500s. In ASL it is the only letter signed with a movement — the pinky literally draws a J in the air.
FAQ
Bubble Letter J FAQs
What is the hardest part of drawing bubble letter J?+
The hook's direction and the stem-to-curve transition. The hook must swing left — rightward hooks aren't a letter at all — and the spot where the straight stem becomes a curve needs easing, not a kink.
How do I draw a lowercase bubble j?+
Draw the capital's shape smaller so only the hook dips below the baseline, then float a dot above the top bar. Keep the hook's curve generous — small letters punish tight kinks when you add the bubble outline.
Why is J called the youngest letter in the alphabet?+
I and J were a single letter until the 1500s, when printers and scholars formally separated them — 'Julius' used to be written 'Iulius.' That makes J the most recent addition to the English alphabet.
How do I copy bubble letter J?+

Yes. The generator, PNG downloads, and coloring pages all work in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android, with copying handled by the normal long-press gesture.

You can — download the J as a PNG and insert it as an image, or copy the Unicode bubble text for editable text. PNG keeps the exact styling; Unicode stays editable and searchable.
